Excessive speed leads to crash in Leamington

A Leamington man is facing multiple charges after allegedly speeding past a police vehicle and crashing into a utility pole.

Provincial police said they were in the area of Dear Run Road in Leamington around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday for traffic enforcement when they first saw a white sedan speeding toward them. The car was recorded going 100 kilometres per hour over the 60 kilometres per hour speed limit.

The officer activated his emergency lights but quickly disengaged because of potential danger to the public. The officer then witnessed the car leave the road. The car hit a utility pole, breaking it into several pieces at the intersection of Deer Run Road and Fox Run Road.

The 20-year-old Leamington man was not hurt in the crash. He is facing charges of stunt driving, failing to stop, and driving a motor vehicle without insurance.

The intersection was closed for about an hour while the hydro line and pole were repaired.
