Fencing installed along river in Assumption Park

You may notice some temporary fencing along the Detroit River in Assumption Park.

The City of Windsor installed the fencing after a complaint to 311 about the condition of the stepped stone wall.

Shoreline protection in Assumption Park under the Ambassador Bridge consists of two treatments; vertical sheet steel pile walls, and the stepped armour stone block revetment which is open to the water.

However, the revetment has settled, and the steps are now uneven and sloped toward the water. High water this year also means the steps are always wet, creating a dangerous situation for the public.

In an abundance of caution, the city has put up the fence to block members of the public from accessing the stone steps and falling into the river. The Parks Department is also investigating the cost of a stabilizing the steps and putting up a permanent railing. It hopes to have a report for city councillors in time for 2020 budget deliberations.

The cost of the temporary fixed can be absorbed into the parks budget.
