Hockey for Hospice faces off Friday

A big weekend is in store for Windsor-Essex hockey, in the name of a good cause.

The 24th annual Hockey for Hospice begins Friday and runs through Sunday, with the proceeds benefitting Hospice of Windsor and Essex County.

"Every year, Hockey For Hospice is one of our premier events," said Hospice Executive Director Colleen Reaume. "It’s so gratifying to see how engaged these kids are in the tournament. Not only do they have fun, raise pledges and learn about the Hospice. They’re teaching their family, friends and neighbours about the Hospice programs and services in our community. Every year they are wonderful ambassadors for us."

There are 134 hockey teams from across the region scheduled to participate. Divisions include Tyke Jamboree, Novice Minor Jamboree, Novice Major Jamboree, Atom, PeeWee, and Bantam boys divisions, and Novice, Atom, and Bantam girls divisions.

Games will be played at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg, Atlas Tube Centre in Lakeshore, Vollmer Recreational Complex in LaSalle, Tecumseh Arena in Tecumseh and Central Park Athletics in Windsor. A total of 230 games will be played at these venues over three days.

Since 1996, Hockey for Hospice has raised over $3.2 million for Hospice programs.
