Windsor police are issuing a reminder after helping out an elderly couple who drove from Etobicoke to Amherstburg without realizing it.
According to police, officers stopped a car in Amherstburg on Sunday afternoon that was travelling on Sandwich Street West near Maple Avenue.
Police spoke with the elderly couple in the vehicle and learned that they had been driving for several hours after getting lost trying to get home. The pair was from Etobicoke and still believed they were in that area, having no idea that they drove over 350 kilometres and were in Amherstburg.
The pair was unable to provide police with any information for family contacts. Officers were concerned for the couple's well being and offered to bring them to the Amherstburg detachment.
Police were eventually able to get in touch with family members and arrangements were made to pick the couple up in Amherstburg. During their lengthy stay with police, officers made sure the couple were well taken care of and were provided with food, medical attention, and a place to rest.
Following the incident, police are reminding anyone with an elderly family member to make sure they have emergency contact information on them at all times.
"There comes a time in many seniors' lives when no longer being able to safely drive becomes a reality," police said in a news release. "Having conversations with elderly family members about no longer driving can understandably be difficult for all parties involved, however having these conversations are sometimes necessary."
