ERCA issues flood watch

Lots of rain and wind could cause flooding in the region.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch due to the 10-20 mm of rain that fell over the last 24 hours and another 40 mm of rain predicted Thursday.

Due to the high water levels in Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie there is the potential for flooding in those areas and their tributaries. There is also a risk of temporary flooding or ponding in low lying areas.

Wind forecasts have been varying more than usual and are currently predicting strong sustained winds varying from west/northwest to southwest starting Thursday evening and into Friday evening.

Should the winds come out of the northwest, it may cause tributaries that flow north primarily the Puce River, Belle River, Duck Creek, and the Ruscom River, to have higher tailwater conditions resulting in greater risks of flooding.

The areas potentially affected by strong west to southwest winds include the Lake Erie shoreline west of Point Pelee National Park and the west and south shoreline of Pelee Island. These areas may experience flooding, shoreline erosion, damaging waves, and waves overtopping splashing and spray.
