Windsor firefighters to inspect homes for smoke detectors

The Windsor Fire and Rescue Service will be visiting homes and apartments checking for working smoke detectors over the next two weeks.

Crews will be visiting residences Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Working smoke alarms are required by law on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or an attached garage. Failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements could result in a ticket for $360 or a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals or $100,000 for corporations.

There have been five fire fatalities in Windsor this year.
