Warning issued after five Windsor fire deaths in 2019

If you're a smoker, Windsor Fire and Rescue has a warning for you.

With an increase of fatal fires in the city during 2019, the fire service has put out an appeal to residents to take extra care and ensure that a fire won't start because someone was careless with a cigarette or any smoking material. This is the deadliest year for fire fatalities in Windsor since 2003.

Out of five fire deaths so far this year, four of them have been attributed to careless smoking. The latest incident occurred on Sunday, when a man was pulled from a home on Louis Avenue and later died in hospital.

Fire Chief Stephen Laforet said smoking should never happen in bedrooms. If you must smoke, get up and go outside, and be sure that all smoking material is put out completely.

The fire service also reminds people that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are not optional. They're the law.

"Working smoke alarms are required by law on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas," it said in a media release. "Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or an attached garage."

Windsor Fire and Rescue's official website provides complete information on fire prevention.
