One person has died in hospital following an apartment fire south of Windsor's downtown core.
According to Windsor Fire and Rescue, the incident began around 8 p.m. on Thursday at an apartment building on Ouellette Avenue near Hanna Street. Within minutes, a full fire attack was underway with multiple firefighters responding to the scene. The blaze was brought under control within half an hour and declared out shortly before 9 p.m.
A male was rescued from the first floor by firefighters and rushed to hospital. He has since succumbed to his injuries, which were sustained in the fire.
Two other people and two dogs have been displaced as a result of the fire.
Fire officials said the blaze started in a first-floor apartment unit. A damage estimate has not been provided at this time.
The Ontario Fire Fire Marshal's Office has been contacted and will be investigating the cause of the blaze.
The northbound lanes of Ouellette Avenue have been closed, and people are being asked to avoid the area.
