Essex votes blue, elects Chris Lewis

Heading into Election Day, the riding of Essex appeared to be Tracey Ramsey's to lose.

In the end, she did lose.

The riding voted blue and elected Conservative Chris Lewis.

The results are unofficial, Lewis captured 46.1 per cent of the vote compared to incumbent Tracey Ramsey of the NDP with 34.8 per cent.

In her concession speech just before midnight, Ramsey said she is so proud of the team that has been around her for the past four years and the work done in Essex.

"Hello everyone. I'm very happy to see you even though this is not the result we were looking for here," Ramsey said.

Ramsey said this election was a hard-fought battle but it was worth it.

"The past four years has been a gift, a gift for me to give back to my community, to really learn about Essex, learn about every nook and cranny of this beautiful riding that I love so much," she added.

Ramsey congratulated Chris Lewis and wished him all the best in representing the riding but won't rule out another political run at some point.

"I truly wish him all the best. Thank you so much and I promise you I will be back," said Ramsey.

Liberal Audrey Festeryga came in a distant third with 18.7 per cent of the vote.

"The people of the riding of Essex have spoken. I'm thrilled that we still have a Liberal government leading the country," said Festeryga. "I'm optimistic that the country is moving forward in the right way."

Green Party candidate Jennifer Alderson with 3.2 per cent, and Bill Capes of the People's Party of Canada with 1.8 per cent.

In the 2015 vote, 60,772 of the riding's 91,816 eligible voters cast a ballot.  In this election, the unofficial count said 64.1 per cent voted.
