Flood warning issued for Lake Erie Shoreline

Strong winds have prompted conservation officials to issue a flood warning along the Lake Erie Shoreline near Point Pelee.

The warning was issued late Sunday morning, with flooding already occurring in the Municipality of Leamington, specifically along Point Pelee Drive.

According to a release from the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA), strong winds are to blame.

"The flooding is due to strong sustained winds out of the southwest at speeds in excess of 30 km/hr over open water. These winds are expected to remain elevated until late Sunday night at which point they are expected to reduce in speed and shift to a more westerly direction," ERCA said in the release.

Areas that could be impacted by these same conditions include the Lake Erie shoreline west of Point Pelee National Park and the western shoreline of Pelee Island.

People are asked to take extra caution in the areas where flooding is occurring and avoid them if possible.
