NBA Championship trophy comes to Windsor

The Toronto Raptors and Dairy Farmers of Ontario are taking the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy on the road, with a stop in Windsor on Saturday.

The trophy was awarded to the Raptors after their historic 2019 NBA Championship win against the Golden State Warriors last June.

Thursday, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens raised the Raptors flag in Charles Clark Square in anticipation of the trophy's arrival.

Thousands of basketball fans turned out last spring to cheer on the Raptors at Charles Clark Square during the NBA Finals. Attendance for Game 5 of the series attracted close to 5,000 people.

The trophy will be on display at Charles Clark Square from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sean Bredt, the chief of marketing and business development with the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, said the tour kicks off a new program encouraging kids to take up sports.

"As we launch the MilkUP youth-focused sports program with the purpose of helping youth across Ontario build a strong foundation with the right nutritional start, we wanted to inspire the youth, and dedicated fans alike, across our province and celebrate the history playoff victory run from the Toronto Raptors," he said.

Fans can also enter to win a pair of tickets to see the Raptors play at their home opener on October 22 against the New Orleans Pelicans. Bringing proof of purchase of a milk product in the last seven days will double the chance of winning.

If you miss the trophy in Windsor on Saturday, it will be in London on October 19.
