The Essex Region Conservation Authority has extended a flood watch issued initially in May to the middle of October now.
It said lake levels remain high, so there is an elevated risk of flooding in the Essex Region, including Pelee Island.
Areas of concern include the shoreline of Lake St. Clair, along the Detroit River, and the shores of Lake Erie.
"Should weather forecasts predict sustained winds above 30- 40 km/hr for a duration of five hours or more, affected areas along the shoreline will be susceptible to nearshore erosion, splashing and spray, with an elevated risk of flooding," read a release from the authority Wednesday. "Shoreline structures exposed to direct wave attack may be susceptible to damage.
The Municipality of Leamington is being advised to monitor flood control dykes in the southeasterly area of the municipality, including Mersa Road 1 Dyke and the Marentette Dyke.
Windsor is keeping an eye on flood control dykes in the Little River Drain corridor.
Water levels in Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie are declining but remain above all-time highs set in 1986.
Lake Erie dropped 26 cm last month from its peak in July but is still 21 cm above the level at this time last year, and 69 cm above the long-term average.
Lake St. Clair has dropped 18 cm from its peak in July, still 24 cm above what it was in September 2018.
