Helping parents navigate social media

There are some new resources for parents worried about social media, and they were developed in Windsor-Essex.

Youth Diversion in Essex County created webinars and podcasts about issues surrounding social media to give parents new tools on how to navigate the ever-changing landscape.

"We wanted parents to have that tool at their convenience and an opportunity to access it whenever they wanted," said Youth Diversion Executive Direction Joanna Conrad.

The program called #parentingunplugged highlights issues many kids face online like bullying, sexting, and online predators and gives parents tools on how to approach the topics with their children.

"We all want to think that it's not our kid but it can be your kid and if it's not your kid it might be their friend. So the more your child knows the more that they can also support their friends," said Conrad.

The #parentingunplugged campaign is just one initiative of three geared toward helping children with these social media concerns. The others are delivered in schools or through Youth Diversion for children ages six and up.

The program was made possible through a $210,000 grant from the Solcz Foundation.

The webinars and podcasts can be found online through the Youth Diversion website or where ever podcasts are available.
