SIU now investigating Labour Day collision

Ontario's law-enforcement oversight agency is now investigating a crash involving a Windsor police cruiser.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to sort out the facts in the collision that occurred Monday morning between the cruiser and an 87-year-old man in a mobility scooter.

According to the preliminary investigation, the cruiser was travelling southbound onto MacDougall Street and was turning left onto Wyandotte Street East when the vehicle struck the man as he was crossing in the scooter.

The victim was rushed to hospital with what has been described by the SIU as a "serious injury". The officer driving the cruiser was not hurt.

The incident resulted in Windsor police closing Wyandotte Street East at Windsor Avenue, Tuscarora Street at McDougall Street, Wyandotte Street East at McDougall Street and Wyandotte Street East at Mercer Street while they investigated.

SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said three investigators have been assigned to the case, along with two forensic investigators, and an accident reconstructionist.

The SIU is contacted whenever there is a situation involving a police officer involving death, serious injury, or sexual assault.
