Windsor Cancer Centre gets new lung cancer detector

The Windsor Cancer Centre is getting a new ultrasound machine that diagnoses lung cancer.

The Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation announced a $1 million donation on Thursday. The new state of the art scanner will be at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre before the end of the year. The $300,000 ultrasound replaces an old scanner, which is two years past its life.

Monica Staley Liang, vice president of the Erie St. Clair Regional Cancer Program, said equipment ages and new technologies emerge and the foundation's support of the cancer teams is very much appreciated.

"Every year about 270 patients are tested here at the Met Campus for lung cancer," said Liang.

Liang said the money will go a long way in supporting patients by making sure they have access to the best possible treatment and diagnostic equipment.

"Access to this machine is critical for lung cancer patients whose life can depend on timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment plan," she added.

The new ultrasound is a minimally invasive but highly effective procedure that uses a long flexible tube to look inside the airways.

The province does not cover the cost of any hospital equipment.

The money will also buy other equipment and provide other services.

The Windsor area continues to have one of the highest rates of lung cancer in Ontario.
