A protest motorcycle ride is planned for Highway 3 next month to shine a light on how unsafe the highway is.
The bike ride is being organized by Ray Perrault and Ray Sterling, friends of Tyler Knight from Kingsville who was killed after his motorcycle was struck by a commercial truck on Highway 3 near Division Road on June 7.
The goal of the protest is to pressure the province to widen the rest of Highway 3 to two lanes each way from Essex to Leamington. The stretch of road has yet to be widened despite promises by Premier Doug Ford while he campaigned in Essex County in May of 2018 in the aftermath of several serious and fatal crashes over the years. Ford told supporters at Colasanti's Tropical Gardens that he was 100 per cent behind the expansion, however, Highway 3 was left off the provincial budget earlier this year.
The protest bike ride will be held September 7 starting at 9 a.m. where Talbot Trail meets Talbot Street East in Leamington.
There is also a fundraiser for Tyler Knight's family September 7 beginning at 4 p.m. at The Car Barn Restaurant in Wheatley.
Knight left behind a wife and three children.
