First Windsor homicide of 2019 investigated

Windsor police have launched a homicide investigation after the discovery of a body on the weekend.

Investigators said a 63-year-old Windsor woman was found dead at her apartment on Wellington Avenue near Wyandotte Street Saturday night. The woman's name is not being released at this time.

Sergeant Steve Betteridge, the Windsor Police Service public information officer, told reporters Tuesday that officers received a call about a deceased person at that location.

"Initially there was very little information surrounding the death," said Betteridge.

Officers then began a canvass of the neighbourhood, gathering additional information. An autopsy was also conducted and Betteridge said the case was reclassified as a homicide on Tuesday morning.

"It's a culmination of all the evidence we gathered so far," said Betteridge. "That includes evidence at the scene, that includes interviewing witnesses. The victim did undergo an autopsy and that includes information and evidence obtained from the autopsy."

The Windsor Police Major Crimes Unit is continuing the investigation, and Betteridge hopes that anyone with information on what happened gives them a call.

"We are hoping that anyone who has any information can reach out to us directly, or anonymous through Crime Stoppers," said Betteridge. "Sometimes the slightest bit of information can be something that can greatly assist us in this case."

Windsor police can be reached at (519) 255-6700, and Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS.

It's Windsor's first murder of 2019.
