Renovations at Jackson Park start Tuesday

Crews will start tearing down the washrooms and the maintenance building in Jackson Park Tuesday.

The washrooms are along the entrance to the Queen Elizabeth II Sunken Gardens will be fenced off during construction, but Manager of Parks Development Mike Clement said the park would remain open.

"You'll still be able to get into the sunken gardens," he said. "You'll still be able to get in to see the planes, so you'll still be able to do your pictures."

The spot is popular with airplane buffs and for wedding photos.

"The buildings were built in around 1960; the original ones," explained Clement. "We're going to be replacing them with newer, larger, more accessible buildings."

The work is expected to last until mid-August. During that period, the main parking lot will stay open. Once construction is complete, the parking lot will then close.

"Later in the season, we'll be building the parking lot. The parking lot will be totally closed, but there will be access to the park and the sunken gardens from the south end off McDougall Street," said Clement.

He noted it is the same parking lot used for Bright Lights in January.
