City offers sandbagging for east Windsor riverfront homes

The City of Windsor is getting ready to distribute sand and sandbags for riverfront properties in east Windsor at risk of flooding.

The city said officials continue to monitor water levels along Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and Little River because more rain and shifting winds are in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.

"While there is no imminent threat at this time, more rain and high winds are in the forecast," the city said. "For that reason, the City of Windsor is moving forward with plans to make sand and sandbags available to residents in the area of greatest risk of flooding at this time."

The city added that homes along the north side of Riverside Drive from Goose Bay Park at Jos Janisse Avenue to the Town of Tecumseh border are most at risk of flooding. Residents from those addresses will be able to pick up their sandbags and sand beginning Wednesday morning and will have to provide proof of address to receive the materials. The location and times for pickup are being finalized and will be announced on Tuesday.

The city said this could be overland flooding and is not related to old infrastructure or backed up sewers.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has again issued a flood watch due to of strong winds this week. The flood watch is in effect for all shoreline areas of Windsor-Essex, including Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the Detroit River until noon on Thursday. ERCA said high wind Tuesday and Wednesday could cause damaging waves and shoreline erosion.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers reported Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie have started the month of May with record high monthly average water levels, which surpassed the previous record set in May of 1986.
