With the rain we've seen over the past couple of days, it was fitting that April was one of the wettest on record.
According to figures provided to BlackburnNewsWindsor.com by Environment Canada, April 2019 was the fourth-wettest April ever recorded in Windsor-Essex. As of midnight Tuesday, 152.1 millimetres of rain had fallen at Windsor Airport.
The wettest April in Windsor was in 1947 with 172.5 millimetres, according to the weather agency. The second-wettest was 2011 with 155.7 millimetres and 1961 was not too far behind that with 154 millimetres.
Peter Kimball, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said rain totals that fell before midnight pushed April's total up and continued to saturate the already wet ground across southwestern Ontario.
"We had 47 millimetres at the Windsor airport. That's not going to help anything," said Kimball. "We had a bit less in London, 13 millimetres."
There will be a lot of drying out going on across the province as well, Kimball added, and it has lead to some bad flooding in the backyard of Canada's capital.
"A lot of areas have seen a lot of precipitation, that's no surprise, Ottawa had 126 millimetres," said Kimball.
April showers traditionally bring May flowers, but Kimball said May is off to a wet start, considering the additional soaking rain that fell on the region early Wednesday morning. More on-and-off showers are in the forecast through Saturday.
