Simpsons have some fun with Windsor & Detroit

The City of Windsor made its debut on The Simpsons Sunday night and the University of Windsor campus was part of it.

The April 28, 2019 episode showed various Windsor-Detroit landmarks, including the University of Windsor, much to the surprise of many in the Windsor area.

"We’re loving this minimalist take of the UWindsor campus by The Simpsons! Windsor proud," the university tweeted on Monday.

Other Windsor landmarks shown Sunday night included the Ambassador Bridge, the Windsor riverfront with Caesars Windsor, and the Detroit skyline with the GM headquarters and Renaissance Center.

The Windsor part of the episode had Marge smuggle herself into Windsor in the trunk of a car filled with teens going across the border to buy beer. Marge wanted to bring Lisa back to Springfield after she was mistakenly given political asylum in Canada during a family trip to Niagara Falls. A Canadian border guard noticed Marge's blue hair sticking out of the trunk but was jokingly told by the teens that it was "a stupid new American fad" called the "car tail". The customs officer bought it and dismissed it saying "oh, we'll get it in six months" as he lets the teens and Marge go through the border crossing to buy their beer and meet up with Lisa.

The episode ends with Homer and Bart coming to Marge's and Lisa's rescue in the middle of the frozen Detroit River after they were abandoned by two snowmobilers trying to get them to the U.S. side of the border. The snowmobilers bailed on them when the ice started cracking below the machines as they were trying to get Marge and Lisa back home.

The Simpsons foursome finally made it across to Detroit but not before a parting shot at how big Detroit builds pickups. Marge asks Homer why he showed up to rescue them in such a large pickup truck after it goes through the ice. Homer answers it was the smallest one they had.
