UPDATE: Windsor scrap yard fire was accidental

The fire at a scrap yard in Windsor on Wednesday afternoon was caused by a cutting torch.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services said the torch accidentally ignited some vegetation at Zalev Scrap Yard near Grand Marais Road and Howard Avenue around 2 p.m. on Wednesday and the flames spread quickly because of strong wind. Fire officials added one building on site had around $20,000 in damage.

Firefighters noticed flames in the vegetation in three different places as well as a fire in the roof of a building at the property. The flames raged for about an hour, sending large plumes of smoke into the air and knocking out windows at a nearby business. Two fire companies were called to help.

The fire was declared under control shortly before 3 p.m and out by 4:30 p.m. with no reports of injuries.
