A man who stabbed a woman in downtown Windsor last year has been sentenced to two more years less a day in jail.
Benjamin Carter, 22, of Windsor, stabbed a woman in the neck outside a bar on Ouellette Avenue near Riverside Drive on June 5, 2018 and was arrested two days later.
Defence lawyer Ken Marley said Carter was credited for time already served, which equals a 15-month sentence. Carter was also sentenced to three years of probation, is banned from owning firearms for the rest of his life, and was ordered to provide a DNA sample for the national databank.
"The effective sentence he received (39 months) was a bit longer than I was seeking, and is a bit less than the sentence the Crown was seeking," said Marley. "But I am grateful that Justice Dean imposed a sentence which will allow for Benjamin to serve it in a provincial reformatory (hopefully one with specific treatment facilities for mental health and drug issues) as opposed to a federal penitentiary."
Police said Carter and the victim knew each other.
The woman survived her injuries, which had been life-threatening.
