The Office of the Ontario Coroner has confirmed to BlackburnNews there will be an inquest into the death of Matthew Mahoney.
Dr Rick Mann, the regional supervising coroner for West Region, said more details about the inquest would be released when a date is chosen.
The 33-year-old man was fatally shot in the parking lot of the McDonald's restaurant at Wyandotte Street East and Goyeau Street on March 21, 2018. Officers were responding to a call about a man carrying a butcher block full of knives and threatening members of the public.
One officer was stabbed during the arrest. Officers also attempted to subdue Mahoney with a taser.
Mahoney was pronounced dead later that morning in the hospital, while the officers were treated for their injuries and released.
Later, Mahoney's family spoke out about his struggles with mental health.
Last week, the province's Special Investigations Unit cleared the officers of any wrongdoing in the death. Director, Tony Loparco ruled the shooting was justified given the circumstances.
Days later, Windsor Police Chief Al Frederick said he would welcome a coroner's inquest and expressed sympathy to the Mahoney family.
"They had literally seconds between themselves and either serious bodily harm or death," he said. "Whatever we can learn, however we can learn it in regards to our response to our community, that's a good thing."
