Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has ended an investigation into a man who complained of injury while in Windsor police custody.
SIU Director Tony Loparco announced Friday that the watchdog agency had ended its probe of the incident, saying that the injuries suffered by the suspect took place before the interaction occurred.
It began around noon on February 6, when a security employee at the Home Depot store in south Windsor tried to apprehend the man, who was suspected of shoplifting from the store. The man fled the scene but was arrested by Windsor police a short time later. The suspect complained of pain once back at police headquarters and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
The examination revealed the suspect had indeed broken his right arm.
"The man’s injury occurred prior to his contact with the police," said Loparco. "As such, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”
The SIU is the provincial arms-length agency that oversees law enforcement across Ontario, in regards to incidents concerning death, injury or sexual assault.
