Lancers hockey coach leads Canada at World University Games

The men's hockey coach at the University of Windsor will be behind Team Canada's bench for the World University Games in Russia next month.

Kevin Hamlin of the Windsor Lancers has been named head coach of the men's team.

The student competition takes place from March 2 to March 12. Canada has 121 student-athletes heading to Krasnoyarsk, Russia. A total of 12 teams are going for gold in the men's competition.

The Canadian men will open play on Saturday, March 2 against Great Britain, with Latvia, Switzerland, Sweden, and Kazakhstan making up the rest of the group. The second group includes Hungary, Japan, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia and the United States.

"It's an honour to represent Canada and I'm looking forward to the experience of competing against others from around the world," said Hamlin. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm confident all participants will make Canada proud."

Canada won three medals at the 2017 games, including a silver medal in women's hockey and a bronze in men's hockey.

Canada has reached the podium in 20 of 21 overall appearances in ice hockey, including seven gold medals, since a men's team debuted in 1968.
