Work to build a new French Immersion school in Windsor should get underway soon.
The Greater Essex County District School Board said work to get the site ready for construction at Mercer Street and Erie Street should begin by mid to late March. The school board said Fortis Construction is doing the environmental cleanup, structural upgrade of the existing building, and the deconstruction and reconstruction of the exterior of the existing building.
"The former International Playing Card factory, a designated heritage building, will be preserved and included in the overall design of the new school," the school board said in an update statement.
Construction of the new school should begin in November of 2019 with an opening anticipated for the winter of 2020.
The school board received a $15.23 million grant from the Ministry of Education in 2015 to build the new school to accommodate French Immersion students in the Northwest area of Windsor.
The public school board bought the land in January of 2017.
