More people were working in Windsor in January

This month's Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada suggests more people had jobs in Windsor last month compared to the month before.

It says the Labour Participation Rate in Windsor was 61.4 per cent, still below the national rate, but an increase of 0.6 per cent from December.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped slightly to 5.2 per cent. The rate takes into accounts seasonal variations month to month of those who are looking for a job. Statistics Canada says the "real" percentage of people who are looking for work and not collecting employment insurance benefits is more like 9.3 per cent.

A year ago, Windsor had an unemployment rate of 4.8 per cent and a labour participation rate of 60.8 per cent.

Across the country, the economy added 67,000 net jobs, but the unemployment rate still grew by 0.2 per cent to 5.8 per cent.

Using the same metrics used in the U.S., Canada's jobless rate was 4.8 per cent, compared to the American rate of 4 per cent, while the labour participation rate was 65.6 per cent. That was 60.7 per cent across the border.

Ontario lead job growth nationally with an increase of 41,000 jobs. However, another 31,000 people were looking for work, and the jobless rate grew 0.3 per cent to 5.7 per cent.

The agency says the private-sector led job gains last month, and the largest beneficiaries were young workers.
