Icy & dangerous driving on tap for Wednesday morning commute

The area of Windsor and Essex County is bracing for freezing rain.

The city said crews are ready to go in advance of freezing rain in the forecast beginning early Wednesday morning. Environment Canada is predicting that freezing rain will move into the area at around 3 a.m. and change to rain with a risk of freezing rain at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The Weather Network is forecasting the freezing rain will begin at around 1 a.m. and turn to freezing drizzle at around 9 a.m before showers start at around 10 a.m.

Windsor officials said crews will pre-salt E.C. Row Expressway and the city’s main roads overnight. They added a significant buildup of ice is possible, which could affect driving conditions during the morning commute. The city said two to five millimetres of ice accumulation is possible.

"Drivers are asked to drive slowly, give extra space for stopping and drive according to the conditions, as they can change or worsen quickly and become unpredictable," said Dwayne Dawson, Executive Director of Operations, City of Windsor.

Windsor police are urging drivers to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.
