Capital spending up for pre-approval in Windsor

Windsor City Council will be asked to approve over $10 million in capital spending Monday night.

Council is not expected to deliberate the 2019 budget until mid-March because of uncertainties tied to provincial announcements and possible changes in provincial grant funding, but city staff are bringing the capital budget forward early to take advantage of early tendering for projects it would like to start this spring.

Of the $10,469,384, more than $6 million is to fix roads and improve the intersection of Lauzon Road, Lauzon Parkway and McHugh Street.

The city is eyeing four roads for rehabilitation including $1,800,400 to continue remedial work on the E.C. Row Expressway. Another $1.9 million will fund work on Grand Marais between Dougall and Dominion Boulevard. $1.1 million will pay for improvements on College Avenue between Wellington Street and Crawford Avenue, and the remaining $1.4 million is for the stretch of the Ninth Concession south of Baseline Road.

Another $600,000 is for a new greenhouse complex at Jackson Park. The total project is worth $6.6 million, but the amount up for pre-approval will pay for a consulting engineer.

The rest is to replace corporate fleet vehicles and equipment used to maintain city parks.

Council has pre-approved capital spending in past years.
