Mail carriers still working but some mail could be delayed

Do not be surprised if you are missing some of your mail.

In the extreme cold blanketing the region, Canada Post is leaving it up to the discretion of mail carriers, especially those who walk their routes, whether to deliver lower priority mail.

The head of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 630, Phil Lyons, told BlackburnNews.com while it is not usual for mail carriers to work in the bitter cold, the temperatures this week have been extreme, even by their standards.

"If the carrier doesn't have access to a vehicle, they team up in groups of two, and they take a vehicle out," said Lyons. "If it's safe, we've been getting it out."

Priority mail, like court documents and passports, are being delivered.

Lyons said a health and safety committee comprised of both union and Canada Post officials reviews the forecast, especially the windchill, and makes a decision each day.
