Windsor police say they have seized a quantity of cannabis from a dispensary that was operating illegally.
The seizure, which took place Friday, was the culmination of an investigation by the WPS Drugs and Guns Unit (DIGS) that had been ongoing for several weeks. Undercover officers began looking into the dispensary, located on Ottawa Street near Pierre Avenue, in December 2018.
A warrant was obtained to search the location, which was done Friday afternoon. A 37-year-old woman has been charged with selling cannabis without authority to an adult, and possession of cannabis with the intent to sell. The suspect's name has not been released and she has been released with a promise to appear at a future court date.
In addition, officers seized cannabis, cannabis edibles, and cannabis-infused lotions, along with an undisclosed quantity of cash.
Police would like to remind residents that even though recreational cannabis is legal across Canada, there are still restrictions on its sale, possession, distribution, and consumption. Currently, recreational weed can only be purchased online through the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS), which is government-owned and operated. There are also laws pertaining to impaired driving and cultivation of cannabis.
The province of Ontario will not allow storefront dispensaries to operate until April, and Windsor City Council has yet to decide whether to opt-out of offering such establishments. If a cannabis retail outlet is operating out of a physical location, it is doing so illegally.
