Fans of the Windsor Spitfires have raised more than $10,000 for local charities at the team's recent home games.
The Spits said their annual "Stick It To Cancer" night raised $4,600 with 100 per cent of money raised going directly to local cancer care and research initiatives.
Another $3,000 was raised November 1 when the Spits teamed up with Windsor police and Special Olympics Ontario.
Fans also helped Sparky’s Toy Drive again this year by donating to the “Fill The Boot” program to the tune of $2,071 on November 10, in addition to the hundreds of toys collected that will make the holiday season brighter for local children in need.
Team captain Luke Boka made the first donation to the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Kettle Campaign at the November 15 game with more than $500.
“Spitfire fans, once again, have stepped up big in support of those in need in our community,” said Coordinator of Media and Public Relations Dave Ducharme. “With the nature of our scheduling, these charitable nights often tend to happen in close proximity to each other but that never stops our generous fans from digging deep, in the traditional spirit of giving we have become so accustomed to in Windsor and Essex County.”
The team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss is on December 16 at 2:05 p.m. versus Saginaw.
