There has been another delay for a renovation project at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, and now officials do not expect it to reopen for overnight traffic until December.
Originally, ceiling renovations were supposed to wrap up last June, and then the finish date was pushed back to the end of October.
In the meantime, the tunnel is still shutting down each night at 8 p.m. and reopening at 5:30 a.m.
Robert Howell, director of operations at the tunnel, told BlackburnNews.com there were some unforeseen complications with the renovations.
"The tunnel ceiling is a combination of concrete that is surrounded by steel liner," he said. "In between the concrete ceiling and the steel liner, there was some things impeding the installation of the anchors."
The obstacles found during construction are not listed on the tunnel's original plans and were not included in the project design. Howell said the contractor had to adjust the plans to accommodate the obstacles.
He said the contractor has also increased the number of workers on the site from an average of 19 a night, to 34 a night.
Construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge is already underway, but he does not believe that project will shortchange the tunnel work in manpower.
The delays have also increased the project's cost, but Howell said there that will be covered by a contingency fund built into the project's original budget.
The work started in October 2017.
