Wondering how your local candidates in the upcoming municipal election would prioritize their health strategy?
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has released the results of a survey it sent out to everyone running for municipal council in Windsor-Essex.
The survey asked respondents to prioritize their efforts based on seven local public health concerns; dental health, substance abuse, food insecurity, mental illness, built environment, climate change, and health inequity.
In total, 87 mayoral and council candidates completed the survey. Of them, 19 are running for mayor or deputy mayor in their respective communities.
Everyone who responded said they would allocate resources for mental illness. On average, candidates said they would provide 25 per cent of their resources in relation to the other six categories to mental health in the community. 89 per cent said they would advocate for low- or no-cost mental health care and increase access to treatment. As for support for first responders, 87 per cent said they would support more training.
The second highest allocation was to substance abuse, where candidates said they would allocate 16 per cent of their resources.
