There are two Terry Fox runs in Windsor-Essex on Sunday.

The event in Tecumseh is at Green Acres Optimist Park. Registration starts at 8 a.m., with opening ceremonies set for 8:30 a.m., and the official start time at 9 a.m. There is a 2 km, 5 km, and 10 km run, walk or ride.

There is a community barbeque after the run.

Participants are asked to bring a refillable water bottle.

In the southern end of Essex County, the annual Kingsville Terry Fox run is in Lakeside Park.

Registration for that event starts at 9 a.m., and the run begins at 10 a.m.

Organizers say the route accommodates walkers, joggers, urban polers, and cyclists of all ages.

The 5 km route is one lap of the park before heading out to Cull Ave., Heritage to the Greenway, onto Division Rd. and back to the park. There is a shorter 2 km run as well.

Proceeds from both events go to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research.

Runs are being held in over 9,000 communities across Canada in honour of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.

Having lost his left leg to cancer a few years before, Fox began his epic at the Atlantic Ocean at St. John's Newfoundland in the summer of 1980 with the hope of reaching the Pacific Ocean. He averaged 42 km a day and crossed six provinces before having to end his marathon in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He passed away on June 28, 1981.
