WRH CEO waiting for urgent announcement with bated breath

Windsor Regional Hospital's CEO is eagerly waiting for the next step in the acute care hospital process.

David Musyj said he hopes to have more information by next month about where the Urgent Care Centre will go. Musyj said the preferred site is still the Old Grace Hospital land at University Avenue West and Crawford Avenue, but the hospital's Ouellette Campus could be in play as a temporary Urgent Care Centre.

Musyj said the provincial government is still in its transition stage and can't give any official feedback yet on hospital plans submitted before the election.

"We have provided them with all of the information with respect to the capital costs of either scenario, the operating costs on a short, medium and longer term plan," said Musyj.

Musyj said various Urgent Care Centres across the province have told him that building new is the way to go.

He said the location of the Urgent Care Centre is the last big issue before the mega-hospital project kicks into high gear.

Musyj said the announcement from the Ministry of Health could come as late as late October or early November when the fall economic statement is anticipated.

"It's a massive transition. There was a government in power for 10 years. This is a dramatic transition to a new government, and it does take time," he said.

Musyj said renovations are already planned for the emergency department on Ouellette and the government is trying to figure out if there is a less expensive way to go.

"It needs to be redone regardless. So, the issue becomes do you throw more money into that campus or is it a better investment to build new," Musyj said.
