Injury To Worker Costs Windsor Company $50K

A Windsor company has been fined after a worker was injured on the job.

Windsor Roma Tiles Limited, a retail flooring store and fabrication shop at 2577 Howard Ave., has been fined $50,000 after an employee was hurt June 10 while cutting and grinding a quartz bar with an angle grinder in the workshop.

The Ministry of Labour says the blade broke and fragments of the blade struck the worker, resulting in permanent injury. An investigation found that the angle grinder was not being operated with a guard or protective hood and the worker had not been instructed by the company to put guards on the angle grinder.

The ministry says the company pleaded guilty on Monday. The court fined Windsor Roma Tiles $40,000 and imposed a 25% victim fine surcharge, as required by law.
