The director of Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has cleared Windsor Police in the shooting death of a man almost a year ago.
Back on September 15, 2017, officers arrived at a home on Betts Ave. in response to an investigation being carried by Amherstburg Police.
Amherstburg officers were investigating an attempted murder. There was a shooting at a home in the town the night before, but the victim survived.
Officers arrived at the home on Betts Ave. in Windsor around 9:30am and set up a perimeter around the house. Over the next two hours, police attempted to communicate with the suspect.
Around 1pm, they heard a muffled bang. Attempts to enter the garage were unsuccessful at first, but with the use of equipment from Windsor Fire and Rescue Services they got the garage door opened.
Inside, they found a 34-year-old man sitting on a couch with a shotgun across his lap and obvious trauma to his head.
Paramedics arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.
A later post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
SIU Director, Tony Loparco concluded there was no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against any police officers concerning the death.
