Construction workers in Lakeshore found more than they expected last week.
Workers beginning a construction project involving West Belle River Rd. and West River St. in Belle River found more than just dirt and stone on the job site. Town of Lakeshore spokesperson Rita Chappell says the workers found what appeared to be aboriginal arrow heads, pottery and tools.
With that unexpected discovery, the road work is being stopped.
Chappell says in a press release that the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS) has requested additional testing, so they will soon begin preliminary archaeological digs in the area near Optimist Park.
The delay in the construction meant that West Belle River Rd. and West River St. were open over the long Civic Holiday weekend. The roads will likely continue to stay open for up to three weeks while the test digs are completed.
Chappell says they are working to adjust the schedule accordingly.
"The town is continuing to review with the contractor and consultant what other aspects of project construction can be completed in the interim, along with evaluating the project schedules," says Chappell.
