Possible Fentanyl Scare In West Windsor

A possible Fentanyl scare led to road closures and a call to the hazardous materials team in Windsor.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called around 9:30am to Sandwich St. and Prince Rd., where they found two people in medical distress and a white powdery substance in a Ford Escape.

Sergeant Steve Betteridge says they were responsive and are in the hospital being treated. Betteridge says testing is underway to confirm if the white powder is Fentanyl.

"They will obtain samples of whatever this substance is and then conduct testing to see exactly what it is," says Betteridge.

Fentanyl is an opioid used as a pain medication and together with other medications for anesthesia. Fentanyl is also made illegally and used as a recreational drug, often mixed with heroin or cocaine.

Police cordoned off the area, but all streets were re-opened around 2:20pm.

Betteridge says charges could be laid depending what the investigation turns up.

"Two people fell ill that were exposed to this and our job is to safely determine exactly what it is," he says. "We don't know what this substance is so we err on the side of caution. Nothing is more important than community safety. So, the number one step was securing the area and keeping the public away."
