A Windsor doctor wants the Ministry of Health to reconsider its decision to fund a new PET/CT scanner at Windsor Regional Hospital.
Dr. Kevin Tracey, who currently provides this service out of his clinic, says the money would be better spent on a mobile unit until the new hospital is built.
He says a fixed unit at Windsor Regional Hospital will be underutilized.
"These scans are very quick to do with the new scanners, the machines sit idle for days if not used optimally," says Tracey.
Tracey says a mobile unit could bring the highest standard of diagnostic care right to patients who need it in communities like Chatham that don't have the technology.
"The funding for that machine can adequately do the patients in Windsor, as well as other sites, so it would be based in Windsor, just like it is now, but with a new scanner we could do all the patients in Windsor within a day or two," says Tracey.
In March, the Ministry of Health announced they were providing the funding for a new machine at Windsor Regional Hospital.
