Fire Contained At Tecumseh Factory

Some quick thinking helped contain a blaze at a Tecumseh business.

Tecumseh Fire and Rescue said the first calls came in shortly after 10am on Thursday about a fire at JNM Tool and Manufacture Inc. on DelDuca Dr. in Oldcastle.

Fire Chief Doug Pitre said he could see the situation unfolding nearby.

"When the tones went off I was at Station 2 and you could visibly see the black smoke," said Pitre. "When I arrived, there were some plastic pallets and cardboard was on fire."

The service sent two companies over to control the fire. Pitre said that a JNM employee with some special training was nearby and he knew what to do.

"One of the employees is also a firefighter for one of the county departments. He used a cabinet hose and was trying to extinguish the fire at that time," said Pitre. "He kept it to where it was not getting into the building. He did a good job of containing it."

Pitre said if the fire had spread to affect the pallets and cardboard behind the building, additional help would have been summoned.

The fire was put out within an hour, but crews remained on scene to check for extensions under the roof. The building was evacuated as a precaution but workers were eventually allowed to go back inside.

Pitre said there were no reports of injuries and firefighters were on scene Monday afternoon determining a damage estimate.
