Windsor Seeks Public Input On Streetcar Restoration Project

The City of Windsor will gather public opinion on how best to show off its streetcar once it is fully restored.

Last October, city council voted 7-4 to accept the donated Street Car #351 and restore it to its former grandeur. One suggestion was to use it as a possible venue to sell food and drink.

The project will cost around $750,000. Some of the funding, $116,000, comes from a surplus generated during the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships. The rest is coming from $7.2-million set aside in the capital budget in 2014.

It was built in Cincinnati, Ohio, but once ran the streets of Sandwich, Windsor and Amherstburg. In 1939, the city retired the use of streetcars in favour of buses.

There is a public meeting Wednesday night at the Chimczuk Museum inside the Art Gallery of Windsor, starting at 5pm. It should wrap up by 7pm.
