Relief on the Way for West Windsor Commuters

After months of construction and delays, west Windsor commuters will soon get some relief.

The long-awaited Sandwich Towne roundabout is set to open later this week, according to the Windsor city engineering department Monday night.

The roundabout, at the place in Sandwich where Riverside Dr W, Rosedale Ave and University Ave W meet, is expected to be paved Wednesday and Thursday and be ready for traffic by the weekend.

Construction had begun on the roundabout in June of this year. Project manager Tiffany Pocock told BlackburnNewsWindsor.com that the roundabout would have a water main underneath it, along with bike lanes and a multi-use trail.  The cost of the roundabout was estimated at the time at $850,000.

That sum includes a statue of Chief Tecumseh in the middle of the roundabout. Its placement caused some ripples among some of the historic neighbourhood's residents who were concerned about accessibility and wanted it to be placed in nearby Patterson Park.

The building of the roundabout was plagued with delays. An archaeological dig took place beginning in late July after possible artifacts were found at the construction site. The roundabout was supposed to have opened to traffic on September 1.
