An additional number of Windsor-Essex residents affected by late summer flooding can now apply for help.
The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs announced Monday they will expand the activation area for the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program in the city of Windsor, plus the towns of Amherstburg, Tecumseh and Lakeshore. This will allow additional residents affected by flood damage to request assistance.
The program was already activated on September 7 in response to catastrophic flooding that took place in the area following severe thunderstorms in late August. Over 200mm of rainfall fell in some areas.
The province says affected residents, small businesses and non-profit organizations that have experienced property damage or loss may be eligible to receive financial help for emergency and recovery expenses.
The program applies to the primary residence and its basic contents, or to a main small business, farm or non-profit. Damage caused by sewer backup is not eligible under this program expect under special provisions for low-income households.
The approximate expanded areas for the program announced Monday are as follows:
- Windsor - Areas west of Huron Church Line roughly bounded by Todd Lane, Malden Rd, the Ojibway Prairie and Prince Rd; south of Cabana Rd bounded by Hwy 401 and Walker Rd; area west of Jefferson Blvd and bounded by Tecumseh Rd E and the E.C. Row Expwy; east of Lauzon Rd bounded by the Detroit River, E.C. Row and the Tecumseh town line.
- Amherstburg - Area straddling Middle Side Rd between Concession Rd 8 and Walker Rd
