Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Reopens, But More Closures Coming

After a nine-day closure, the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel is open again for cross-border commuter traffic.

The tunnel reopened at 5:30am Monday morning, but will close again nightly at 8pm until November 22.

During the extended closure, heavy excavation work was carried out. The ceiling is 85 years old, well beyond its expected work life, and years of vibrations from trucks, moisture, salt, and exhaust took their toll.

"The tunnel is inspected on a regular basis. We do a detailed engineering inspection every year, and then, there are inspections that take place throughout the year," says Windsor-Detroit Tunnel CEO Carolyn Brown. "There were no surprises."

The work is not quite done yet.

Between November 27 and December 23, the tunnel will close every night at 8pm and reopen in the morning at 5:30am.

It will fully reopen between December 23 and January 1 to accommodate cross-border Christmas traffic.

Then between January 2 until June, it will again close at 8pm each night, reopening at 5:30am.

The closures will affect Transit Windsor's tunnel bus service.

The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel was completed in 1930.
