Housing Starts Jump In Lakeshore, Not In Windsor

If you are building a home, there is a good chance you are doing it in Lakeshore.

The Town of Lakeshore says housing starts were up 23% in September over a year ago.

A total of 894 building permits were issued in the town, and 261 were for homes. That compares with 212 in September 2016, where a total of 627 permits were handed out.

"As of December 31, 2016, there was a total of 264 house permits issued," says Rita Chappell-Arsenault in a statement from the town. "Lakeshore will definitely exceed that number within the next couple of weeks."

In Windsor, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation paints a different picture where housing starts were down.

Construction started on 66 single-detached homes last month, compared with 81 in September 2016, a drop of 19%. When multi-unit starts are added in, the decline is even more pronounced at 22% from last year.

So far this year, there have been 903 housing starts, a drop of 5% compared to the same period in 2016, where ground broke on a total of 955 single-detached and multi-unit dwellings.
