A city committee will consider a proposal to build a decorative arch to welcome people to Windsor's Olde Sandwich Towne.
In addition to the roundabout currently under construction at Sandwich St. and University Ave. W, it would serve as a gateway to the historic neighbourhood. Stretching over Sandwich St., the arch would connect Patterson Park with McKee Park.
Work on the roundabout is expected to finish later this month before the centrepiece, a bronze statue of Chief Tecumseh, is installed.
In a second phase of the project, the city would engage the public to find stories unique to Sandwich Town which will be told on bronze plaques mounted on the limestone abutments. A report to Tuesday night's Planning, Heritage, and Economic Development Standing Committee suggests going to the public to find engaging stories that reflect the neighbourhood's significance in Canadian history.
So far, the cost of the project has not been made public. A second report coming to city council on October 18 will include financial details.
Proponents of the project have decided to present it now, ahead of budget deliberations, to move the approval and request for proposals process along faster.
