SIU Concludes Suspect Hurt Himself

The head of Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has concluded a 43-year-old man who claimed he was hurt while in police custody, actually hurt himself.

Director Tony Loparco terminated the investigation into a domestic incident on August 15.

While police were arresting a 43-year-old man, he told the officers to watch his hand because he had hurt it before they arrived. He was taken to police headquarters downtown, and then to the hospital so he could get medical treatment.

"The man's injury was self-inflicted and had nothing to do with his contact with police," says Loparco.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where a suspect has died, suffered a serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
